A Gynecologist's Second Opinion

Recent developments in gynecology have changed the treatment alternatives now available to women with gynecologic problems and made necessary the revision of A Gynecologist's Second Opinion. In addition, it has become increasingly apparent that the present pressures of healthcare leave doctors little time or incentive to learn about new medical developments. They have even less time to explain medical problems and treatment alternatives to their patients. Therefore, I think it has become more important for patients to educate themselves about available treatment options, about what questions to ask the doctor, about when to seek out another opinion.

I am a practicing gynecologist and Clinical Professor of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the UCLA School of Medicine. I have been teaching the new surgical techniques covered in this book for the last fifteen years as a faculty member for the American Association of Gynecologic Laparoscopists. I am an editor for the Journal of the American Association of Gynecologic Laparoscopists and a reviewer for the journal Obstetrics and Gynecology and I have published a number of research articles in those journals and others. All this experience has allowed me to stay in the forefront of my field and I have tried to bring you the best medical information available in A Gynecologist's Second Opinion.

In my practice, I often have the opportunity to see women for a second opinion regarding gynecologic problems. I view my role not only as a doctor, but also as an educator. My approach has been to offer each woman all of the medical information available regarding her problem, to be available for all questions and concerns, and to allow the patient to make her own decision as to the best course to follow.

The first edition of this book was born out of frustration. Over the years it became apparent to me that there were no good books for women to read that provide compassionate, in-depth, yet understandable information about the gynecological problems I often take care of. The books I found were either encyclopedic, providing only very brief descriptions of a large range of women's health care issues, or were focused on only one subject, usually hysterectomy, and fail to present information about many of the difficult gynecologic problems that women sometimes face. Other books contained medically incorrect information or lacked the careful analysis of the risks and benefits of treatment that each women needs to be aware of in order to make the right medical decision for herself.

We have written A Gynecologist's Second Opinion to help you understand both how your body normally works and what has gone wrong when a problem arises. Arranged in a Q&A format, this book provides clear descriptions of common gynecological problems, up-to-date thinking regarding their causes, and state-of-the-art information about treatment. Multiple options for treatment for each problem are outlined; the option of no treatment is discussed when appropriate and treatment with medication, surgery, and current research that may lead to new alternatives in the foreseeable future are also discussed. A Gynecologist's Second Opinion is filled with the stories of women who have actually had these problems. This makes the medical facts come alive, and allows the reader to experience examples of a search for treatment.

A Gynecologist's Second Opinion is not meant to be a substitute for an appointment with a doctor. It is, however, intended to help you comfortably gain information and understanding without time constraints or outside pressures. Reading the book may help you to plan your questions before you go for a scheduled doctor's appointment. It may help you to make an appointment you've been avoiding, or it may serve as an educational resource once you have seen your doctor. Your intelligence, your curiosity, and your skepticism are needed in any search for good health care. Any person facing a serious medical problem should be urged to get a second opinion. A Gynecologist's Second Opinion is a companion in that quest for answers and good care.

We hope this book provides you with a trusted reference to turn to, and we wish you good health,
William H. Parker, MD
